24 Hours in LA Without Kids

24 Hours in LA

I’m still on a high from last weekend. I spent 24 hours with my girlfriend. Without any kids! It was exactly what I needed to restore my patience. Me time is good for the soul. I will admit to crying a few tears when I left them on Saturday morning. It was my first night away from Sybil and one of only a handful of nights I’ve spent away from Lawson (including 3 nights after Sybil was born).

We only had a little over 24 hours and made the most of it. We started off with brunch at Joan’s on Third. I was too excited to take any photos, but the bran muffin was a definite highlight. After brunch we wandered a couple of blocks to Credo. They have a fantastic selection of clean beauty products, including my go to skincare line.

After trying an embarrassing number of times, I finally managed to parallel park. Why is that a skill I have not retained??? Next we stopped at Moon Juice. I’ll be honest, I’m not sold on the benefits of their products but it was fun to look around.

Last year we visited LA and I had the absolute best iced tea I’d ever had. It was a special of the day, but luckily they still made it! I had been dreaming about it for a year. I’m telling you, the peppermint honey milk iced tea is where it’s at!

24 Hours in LA

There are a few fun walls to take photos along Melrose and we took advantage of all of them (although we skipped the famous pink wall since we’d done that last year). It was nice to take our time and wander in and out of stores. Usually I’m sweating pushing a double stroller and trying to calm crazy kids!

24 Hours in LA

After our feet were sore, we hopped in the car and headed to Venice. After a quick stop at Cuyana (one of my favorite brands) where I almost picked up this cashmere scarf, we both saw The Butcher’s Daughter at the same time and immediately put our name on the waiting list. It didn’t disappoint.

With our bellies full, we headed to Santa Monica to check out The Detox Market, another clean beauty store. I got a gift card for my birthday and had fun checking out all the possible ways to use it. This Vintner’s Daughter serumVintner’s Daughter serum is high on my list of potential purchases.

24 Hours in LA

We stayed at the Le Meridien Delfina and I’d highly recommend it. It’s a good location a few blocks from the beach. The rooms are spacious and modern. A glass of red wine in their front lounge area was the perfect spot to relax after our day and before dinner at Tar & Roses. I wish I would have gotten a photo of the fried cauliflower and strawberry ricotta dessert. Sooo good!

24 Hours in LA

Sunday morning we wandered 4 blocks to the beach to cross off an item on my LA bucket list. While the beach wasn’t empty, I did get a few photos that I really love. Afterwards we headed to Urth Caffe for brunch before heading home to hug on my little luvs!

I cannot stress how important it was for me to get away. With two little ones, life is crazy and I don’t often put myself first. Time away is good for all of us. A huge thank you to my girlfriend for recognizing I was desperate for a break and my luv for taking on solo parenting duties while we were away.

Weekend Roundup: No. 168

Weekend in LA

It is such a clique, but can you believe Sunday is the start of October? Where does the time go?? It’s officially fall, even if it doesn’t always feel like it, Jim is wrapping up the first term of his MBA program next week and Halloween is right around the corner. Oh, and I’ve been putting together my Christmas wish list for weeks.

Yesterday afternoon at 1:30 I found myself with two kids refusing to nap and staring at the next 5 hours before bedtime. So I headed across the street to watch filming of the Bachelor. It didn’t take long for Lawson to sprint under the ropes and take off with me chasing after him while carrying Sybil. After that we maintained our distance from the stage. We didn’t see Arie and his dates, but we did see Chris Harrison. I’m pretty sure he said it’s going to the most dramatic season of the Bachelor yet. :)

This weekend is pretty much free of plans. I’m most looking forward to a solo trip to Target. I should be embarrassed to share that, but I’m not. I just asked Jim if we could get crepes for breakfast on Saturday morning. He didn’t take much convincing.

HIGH POINT:

It’s a tie this week. First up…I am having so much fun with my new iPhone (I got the 8 Plus). The camera is phenomenal. I thought I took a lot of photos before. Now I can’t resist pulling it out whenever there’s a potential photo opp. Second…when my girlfriend and I grabbed brunch last Saturday morning she asked if I wanted to split a bran muffin. I agreed but in my head I was thinking “who eats bran muffins? Aren’t they for old people?” Turns out I’m a huge fan of bran muffins. We split another one on Sunday. And I’m trading our Friday treats for bran muffins this morning. Who knew??!

LOW POINT:

It’s the sign of a good week when I can’t come up with a low point. Not even Lawson and Sybil refusing to nap yesterday.

FIND OF THE WEEK:

It’s another tie between this lace top (on sale for $55) and this sweatshirt (on sale for $25). I bought the lace top last year and ended up returning it after not wearing it. I’ve regretted it ever since. And a grey J. Crew hoodie sweatshirt for $25? It seems too good to be true. Don’t forget the Shopbop sale ends today. Shop these fall essentials all on sale (including the black lace top)!

Whatever you’re up to this weekend, make it a great one friends! xoxo

Weekend Roundup: No. 167

Weekend

Happy, happy Friday! This week was much better than the last. Tantrums were fewer and we all got a little more sleep. Things are looking up.

I pick up the new iPhone today! I’m pretty excited to test it out this weekend. In case you missed it, one of my best girlfriends is flying in tomorrow for a quick weekend visit. We’re leaving Jim with the kids and staying in Santa Monica for the night. I cannot wait to eat, sleep, shop, laugh, drink, relax, sleep (oh did I already say that??). Clearly I’m just a little excited.

I had a mini revelation this week. Sometimes I see an article of clothing and think I need it. Since we’re being extra cautious with our expenses this year, I am really trying not to make impulsive purchases. By giving myself time, I find I already own something similar. Does that ever happen to you?

I hope you enjoy this first weekend of fall!

HIGH POINT:

Lawson, Sybil and I went on a few fun excursions this week. We checked out Pan Pacific Park, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Grove and Barnes & Noble. Oh and they napped at the same time twice!

LOW POINT:

A family member asked for our address last week. I quickly sent it off not realizing I forgot to include a key component: our apartment number. I feel terrible about making little mistakes. It’s a good reminder to slow down.

FIND OF THE WEEK:

While at Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago, I saw the book “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” and took a photo as a reminder to add it to Sybil’s Christmas list. When we were there this week, I noticed they had signed copies available. Since we never gave Sybil a birthday gift, I decided the book was the perfect one for her first birthday. I want her to know she can do and be anything she wants. Since doing a little quick research, I’ve learned the book is the #1 most crowdfunded original book. Pretty impressive.

P.S. In case you were counting, you may have noticed the weekend roundup numbers jumped a bit (really I know no one will notice, but just in case I have to mention it). I finally actually counted them and now it’s accurate. Hey, it’s the little things in life, right?

Life Lately

Off the Shoulder Swimsuit Off the Shoulder Swimsuit Off the Shoulder Swimsuit

Before we get into this off the shoulder swimsuit…I always have so much I want to include in my weekend roundup posts and then when I actually go to write them, I forget half of it. So I’ve been making notes and am including it all in one big life lately post. Get ready for a bunch of randomness…

We’ve been in LA for almost a month. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I like it here. We walk everywhere. I haven’t driven in over 10 days.

After Sybil used my iPhone as a teether, the home button and Touch ID shorted out. I have been anxiously awaiting the new iPhone announcement and placed an order for the 8 Plus last week. I’m so excited for the camera. I pick it up on Friday afternoon!

The improved iPhone camera comes at the perfect time. My girlfriend and I are going on an “Instagram” tour of LA on Saturday. Post-tour, you can find me lounging by the pool wearing this off the shoulder swimsuit, which is currently on major sale (also comes in red and black). I typically shy away from strapless suits, but this one has surprisingly good support.

I quit my job to figure out what I wanted to do next over 3 years ago. And then I got pregnant and had Lawson. And then I got pregnant again and had Sybil. Lately I’ve been thinking about working part-time, preferably from home. I think it would be good for Lawson and Sybil to have someone else care for them a few hours a day. I miss using my brain in a different way and could honestly use a break from them. Not to mention living in LA without any income for a year. More to come on this one…and if you know of anyone looking for an accounting or project management help 20 hours a week, let me know.

I’ve struggled to get into a consistent running routine. Instead of beating myself up about it, I’m giving myself some grace. Until Sybil starts sleeping through the night consistently, I’m just not willing to give up even more sleep to run before Jim goes to school.

Does anyone else feel like they spend a ton of $$$ on groceries? Grocery shopping has gotten to be one of my biggest stressors. Feeding a family of four is expensive! If you have any tips on how to buy organic, healthy foods by spending less, please send them my way.

Lastly, Anthropologie’s jean sales are a well kept secret. They carry some of my favorite brands and the markdowns can be really good. Sizes can sell out quickly, especially when they have an additional promo. I bought these last week when they were an additional 25% off and have already worn them 3x.
