In a Rut…

yoga

You may have noticed the lack of fitness posts lately. The truth is I’m in a bit of a rut. After 5 months of strict marathon training, I’m having trouble setting a goal or finding a new fitness activity to energize me. That’s not to say I haven’t been working out at all, but a couple of 3 mile runs each week isn’t enough for me to feel my best. I’ve thought about barre method classes, joining a CrossFit gym or getting more into yoga. I’ll be training for another couple of Ragnar events later this year, but ideally I’d take the next few months to mix it up and focus on something different. Each week I tell myself this is going to be the week I commit and get back into it. Yet I can’t force myself to get up before work in the morning and the thought of working out after a long day leaves me exhausted just thinking about it.

I’ve been through this before and I always find a new goal to snap out of it. I know eventually I will this time too. Do you ever lose the motivation to work out? How do you snap out of it? Or have you truly made an active lifestyle a habit?

First of all, good for you for taking a bit of a break after the big marathon. That’s good for both body and mental recovery. I agree that getting going again can be hard without a goal. I have started to enjoy the “off-season” as that’s when I experiment with new classes. I typically stay with the same types of workouts but maybe I’ll try a new hot yoga studio (bikram instead of sumits) or a new place to take a spin class (Madison Improvement Club). That can make doing the same workouts that I do during triathlon training season more interesting when I’m not focused on an event goal. I’ve got one tri down this Spring and one to go in a few weeks and then look forward to some more of this experimenting.

That’s great advice. I’ve been trying to branch out and do something other than run. Running is the easiest workout in terms of time, but it can get a little boring if you don’t mix it up. Congrats on your triathlons too!
